In both his controller and chief financial officer roles he had significant influence in the selection of healthcare plans, premium determinations, deductibles, and pharmaceutical formulary lists.

Insurance costs were exploding.  As a senior executive, he believed it was critical that management ask the right questions.  He realized that while plans, premiums and deductibles were important, he should have been asking “why are our employees needing more healthcare?”

This led him to view health through a completely different lens. 

Now through public speaking he helps people understand how they can improve their health while lowering their food cost, and employers understand how they can promote healthy behavior to reduce healthcare claims expense.

Shiring earned a degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University and a Masters of Business Administration from Arizona State University where he received the Outstanding Graduate Business Student Award.

In 2002, he completed the White Rock Lake marathon.  He won his age category in the 2012 Renaissance Tower (54 floors) “Fight for Air” race, and at the age of 67 years young, passed the US Navy Physical Fitness Exam for a 22 year old.
